Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Is Now Facing the iPhone Duo Question

With reviews of Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro now arriving, consumers have a new decision to make: stick with Apple’s traditional flagship design or wait for the company’s first foldable iPhone.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are now being reviewed ahead of their wider launch, while Apple’s iPhone Duo has become the headline product of the company’s latest hardware generation.

The contrast between the two devices is interesting.

The iPhone 18 Pro is Apple’s conventional flagship. It focuses on improving the existing iPhone formula with a faster processor, better cameras, improved battery performance and refinements to the display and design.

The Duo takes a completely different approach.

It introduces a folding display and opens into a much larger 7.6-inch screen.

That makes it more expensive, but also gives it a completely different use case.

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the Pro Max starts at $1,299. The iPhone Duo begins at $1,999.

The $700 difference between the Duo and the Pro Max therefore isn’t buying a better version of the conventional iPhone.

Instead, consumers are paying for the foldable form factor.

That distinction could make the purchasing decision particularly interesting.

Someone who primarily wants a powerful smartphone and high-end camera may prefer the Pro Max.

Someone who wants a larger display that can fit into a smaller folded footprint may be willing to pay more for the Duo.

The devices also differ in their camera systems.

The Duo uses Apple’s 48-megapixel Dual Fusion camera system, while the Pro models use Apple’s Pro Fusion camera setup.

That means the foldable model isn’t necessarily intended to replace the Pro Max for photography-focused users.

Instead, Apple appears to be creating two separate premium experiences.

The situation demonstrates how the smartphone market is evolving.

For years, manufacturers competed mainly on processor speed, cameras and display quality.

Foldable phones introduce another dimension: form factor.

A smartphone can now compete not only on how powerful it is but also on how its physical design changes the way people interact with it.

Apple is arriving relatively late to this market.

Samsung has been producing foldable smartphones since 2019, while other manufacturers have also developed multiple generations of folding devices.

Apple’s entry could nevertheless have a major impact because of the size of its premium smartphone customer base.

The company’s foldable could introduce millions of existing iPhone users to a form factor they may never have considered before.

That could accelerate the broader adoption of foldable phones.

For now, consumers have an unusually wide choice at the top of Apple’s lineup.

The iPhone 18 Pro represents refinement, while the Duo represents a much more dramatic change in how an iPhone can be used.

The success of the two devices will help show whether consumers want Apple to continue improving the familiar smartphone or push further into completely new form factors.
